About Andrea Chavetz
Andrea’s goal as an English teacher and instructional aide has always been to focus on finding ways to make learning a smile-producing experience. Creating an environment for children to bravely and happily explore writing through stimulating prompts and frank conversations is her passion. Writing can be intimidating, so offering a quiet and comfortable opportunity to just write away is her focus.
With a Masters in Education, a major in English, and ten years as an English teacher in Montgomery County Public Schools, she comes to teaching her Write Away! enrichment class with the ability to teach writing conventions as well as a desire to allow young writers time and freedom to explore and become enthusiasts about self expression on paper.
She gives students choices to develop their own writing styles through choosing their own topics, finding their own voice on paper, and having the opportunity to write away without too much concern about conventions. Visiting professional writers will share their experiences with the class as well as listen to students' questions and descriptions of their writing projects. Ownership and pleasure are key to her philosophy in helping children become writers.
Being with children brings Andrea tremendous joy. Observing their frankness, curiosity and energy, be it on the playground, in the classroom or at home, gives her optimism about the future. In addition, she loves exploring "off-highway" life, both literally and figuratively, and sharing her observations with others through poetry, letters and conversations.
